FSU's Justin Zimmer Picks Up Two More National Player Of The Week Awards
Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University sophomore defensive end Justin Zimmer (Greenville) continues to be recognized for his recent play as he has picked up two additional National Defensive Player of the Week awards.
Zimmer, who earlier this week was rewarded for his efforts in the Bulldogs' weekend win by being chosen as one of theBeyond Sports Network National Defensive Player of the Week recipients, was recognized today as the lone recipient of the D2football.com National Defensive Player of the Week honor.
In addition, he was also among the honorable mention choices for National Defensive Player of the Week by USA College Football. He previously was also awarded the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Defensive Player of the Week Award.
This week, Zimmer joined offensive selection Brent Wilson of Emporia State (Kan.) and special teams honoree Shannon Maura of Shippensburg (Pa.) as the lone national player of the week recipients chosen by D2football.com.
Zimmer had perhaps his best contest in a Bulldog uniform as Ferris State posted a decisive 34-7 league road win over defending conference champion Ashland on Saturday (Sept. 21) night in FSU's first-ever trip to Jack Miller Stadium.
In the win over Ashland, Zimmer scored his first career touchdown on a 20-yard interception return late in the first half to push the Bulldogs' advantage to 27-0 at halftime. He also tallied 4.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss to go with a team-high 10 total stops. Additionally, he broke up a pass and forced a key fumble as Ferris State took control in the first half of action.
His performance helped the Bulldog defense allow only seven points after giving up 49 points or more in each of the first two games this campaign. He also accounted for nearly all of FSU's five sacks on the day while his interception was one of three turnovers forced by the Ferris State defense.
Zimmer joins sophomore quarterback Jason Vander Laan (Frankfort, Ill./Chicago Christian), who claimed offensive recognition last week, as a National Player of the Week recipient for the Bulldogs this campaign. Vander Laan was the D2 National Offensive Player of the Week following FSU's win over Lake Erie (Sept. 14) by D2football.com, Beyond Sports Network and USA College Football.
With Saturday's win over Ashland, the Bulldogs moved to 2-1 overall and remained unbeaten with a 2-0 mark in the GLIAC.
Ferris State heads back to Ohio this Saturday (Sept. 28) to face Walsh University in a 6 p.m. (ET) evening tilt at historic Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio. The stadium is located at the site of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
