Ferris State Football Recognizes 2013 Team Award Recipients

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University football program wrapped up a successful 2013 campaign and the second season under head coach Tony Annese with a 8-3 overall record along with a second-place 8-2 finish in the GLIAC North Division standings.
FSU, which finished the year riding a four-game winning streak, narrowly missed receiving the school's first playoff bid in 17 years.
The Bulldogs' eight-win campaign was the school's first since 2006 and only the second in the program's last 16 seasons. FSU's eight league wins were also its most since 1996.

FSU recently announced its 2013 team award recipients at the program's season-ending awards banquet held Sunday (Nov. 17) at Falcon Head Golf Club in Big Rapids, Mich.  The event included an awards presentation along with comments from Coach Annese and his staff in addition to words from FSU Athletics Director Perk Weisenburger.

The Bulldogs used the event to honor 17 outgoing seniors for their outstanding dedication to the program, which won only a single game in their freshmen season.

The Bulldog coaching staff presented four major awards to a group of five seniors for their accomplishments.  Senior defensive backs John Purdy (Traverse City/West) and Jonathan Flynn (Traverse City/West) were both chosen as co-recipients of the "Butch Jones" Coaches Award winner for their efforts as an extra "coach" on the field.  The award is named for Bulldog alum and current University of Cincinnati head coach Butch Jones.

Senior linebacker Cam Howard (Traverse City/West) was honored as the first "Bob Leach" Leadership Award recipient.  The award is named for former Ferris State head coach Bob Leach, who coached the school's unbeaten 1968 squad.  Howard was recognized for his strong skills in being a leader of this year's team.

Senior offensive tackle Samuel Parker (Muskegon/Mona Shores) was recognized as the Mr. Bulldog Award winner for displaying outstanding qualities along with heart and dedication to the Bulldog program.

Also, senior tight end Jace Heneveld (Zeeland/East) was the second-ever recipient of the Bill Scheible "In The Fold" Award named in honor of the longtime FSU Gridiron Club president.  The award recognizes an individual who displays the program's four major attributes of faith, order, love and discipline.

The Bulldog coaching staff presented the Most Valuable Offensive Player honor to sophomore quarterback Jason Vander Laan (Frankfort, Ill./Chicago Christian) for the second year in a row with senior defensive back Marvin Robinson (Winter Haven, Fla.) claiming the Most Valuable Defensive Player honor.

FSU running back Korey Ringer (Dayton, Ohio) was the recipient of the Offensive Skill Player of the Year honor with senior defensive back Jamar Wimberly (Marshall) earning Defensive Skill Player of the Year recognition.

The Defensive Lineman of the Year Award was presented to juinor defensive tackle Corey Stone (Sterling Heights/Stevenson) while the Offensive Lineman of the Year honor was bestowed upon senior tackle Carlin Landingham (Muskegon) for the second consecutive year.

The team's Most Improved Award was shared by senior cornerback James Stewart (Detroit/University Prep) and sophomore slot Antonio Agurs (Bradenton. Fla./Manatee) on the defensive and offensive sides, respectively.

Team Newcomer of the Year honors went to junior slot receiver Dontae Ingraham (Miami, Fla./Carol City) on offense and junior linebacker Darnell Morris (Detroit/Inkster) on defense with Special Teams Player of the Year recognition handed to senior kicker Austin Kantola (Ravenna) for the second-straight campaign.

A pair of true freshmen, linebacker Anthony Darkangelo (Detroit/Catholic Central) and defensive end Marquis Dawsey (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee) shared Rookie of the Year recognition.

Meanwhile, the Scout Team Player of the Year Awards went to freshman quarterback Nick Maher (Woodhaven) and freshman defensive back KC Zenner (Rockford) for the offense and defense, respectively.

The Bulldogs' eight wins in 2013 included the program's second-straight victory over rival Grand Valley State to claim the Anchor-Bone Trophy along with the program's first road win at Michigan Tech in 15 years.  FSU had one of the top two marks in the highly-competitive GLIAC North Division for the second year in a row while facing one of the nation's toughest schedules again in 2013.
