Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University men's basketball alumni, fans and community supporters had an opportunity to meet new head coach Andy Bronkema and enjoy a day on the links as the Bulldogs held their 10th annual men's basketball alumni and friends golf outing on Wednesday (July 24) at FSU's Katke Golf Course.
The outing was deemed a big success and held on a beautiful day in Big Rapids with more than 100 golfers on hand for the annual event along with the postgame dinner held nearby at Buffalo Wild Wings.
"It was an outstanding day and we had a great time at the outing," said Bronkema, who was officially hired as the school's new head coach in early July after six seasons as a Bulldog assistant coach. "I had a chance to meet a lot of new people and at the same time saw a lot of familiar faces.
"We thank all the golfers for their support of Bulldog Basketball and hope they can come out and watch us play this season," he said.
Bronkema also thanked the course staff at Katke Golf Course, including PGA professional Ian Ziska, and Buffalo Wild Wings, under general manager Steve Cassiday, for their support of the outing in addition to longtime supporter Jim Bradley, who annually helps draw a strong contingent of golfers from the Canadian Lakes area to help the cause. A number of local businesses, campus offices and individuals also served as tee and hole sponsors or donated prizes.
"Our golf outing wouldn't be nearly as successful without all of their efforts and we appreciate their involvement," he said.
A group of local business people teamed up to shoot an impressive low round of 51 to emerge as the event champions with Scott Biller, Jeff Mossel, Brad Fath and Buzz Fortino earning the day's top billing.
The 18-hole outing serves as an important fundraiser for the Bulldog men's basketball program. Several student-athletes from the team were also involved, including team captains Drew Lehman and Dietrich Lever, who served as celebrities on the course for various contests.
A wide range of raffle prizes, silent auction items and pin/proximity awards were also handed out at the conclusion of the day's events.
Bronkema takes over a Ferris State program with a long track record of success that includes more than 1,000 all-time victories, 13 GLIAC Championships and nine NCAA Tournament appearances. Ferris State wrapped up the 2012-13 season with a 14-13 overall record and the Bulldogs reached the GLIAC Postseason Tournament for the eighth time in the last nine years, which ranks as one of the conference's top showings over the past decade.
Overall, Ferris State has won four league championships and twice reached the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen in the past decade. FSU also posted an impressive 10-1 mark at home in league regular-season action during the 2012-13 season at Jim Wink Arena.
A strong nucleus is expected back for the Bulldogs this fall in Bronkema's debut season as 11 of the Bulldogs' 13 team members from this past campaign are eligible to return.
