Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's basketball program had a record day as the program recently held its 11th annual men's basketball alumni and friends golf outing in late July at FSU's Katke Golf Course.
The record-breaking day was held on a beautiful day in Big Rapids with more than 120 golfers on hand for the annual event along with the postgame dinner held nearby at Buffalo Wild Wings.
"It was the largest group we've ever had for the outing and we're thankful for all the support," said FSU head coach Andy Bronkema, who completed his first season at the Bulldog helm this past year. "We saw a lot of familiar faces and were able to attract some new teams, who we hope will continue to be part of the outing and support our program in the years ahead.
"We thank all the golfers for their support of Bulldog Basketball and hope they can come out and watch us play this season," he said.
Bronkema also thanked the course staff at Katke Golf Course, including PGA professional Ian Ziska, and Buffalo Wild Wings, under general manager Steve Cassiday, for their support of the outing in addition to longtime supporter Jim Bradley, who annually helps draw a strong contingent of golfers from the Canadian Lakes area to help the cause. A number of local businesses, campus offices and individuals also served as tee and hole sponsors or donated prizes.
"Our golf outing wouldn't be nearly as successful without all of their efforts and we appreciate their involvement," he said.
The 18-hole outing serves as an important fundraiser for the Bulldog men's basketball program. One of the day's highlights included a hole-in-one from longtime Bulldog Basketball supporter Marshall Henry on a free throw hole in which he earned a second tee shot by sinking the free throw.
A wide range of raffle prizes, silent auction items and pin/proximity awards were also handed out at the conclusion of the day's events.
The Ferris State men's basketball program has a long track record of success that includes more than 1,000 all-time victories, 13 GLIAC Championships and nine NCAA Tournament appearances. FSU has also reached the GLIAC Postseason Tournament eight of the last 10 years, which ranks as one of the conference's top showings over the past decade. The Bulldogs have won four league championships and twice reached the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen since 2004.
The 2013-14 season, under Bronkema's directon for the first time, marked the 12th consecutive year to date in which FSU has finished with double-digit victories. A strong incoming recruiting class will join a Bulldog squad that is expected to return nearly every key piece from last season after losing only a single senior.
Below are results from the outing:
First-Place Team: Chilcote, Chilcote, Cotter, Bloomquist
Second-Place Team: Mohnke, Mohnke, Mohnke, Horn
Third-Place Team: Fath, Geib, Geib, McLeod
