FSU Blueline Club's Kevin Courtney Receives "Pete Peterson Bulldog Pride" Award

Note: This is the second of four major FSU Athletics Awards that will be presented this week for the 2012-13 campaign.  The remaining awards will be announced over the next two days.

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University Athletics Department has recognized a longtime supporter of Bulldog Hockey and active community member as the school's 2012-13 recipient of the annual "Pete Peterson Bulldog Pride Award" with the selection of Kevin Courtney for his numerous contributions to Ferris State Athletics.

Courtney, who has served as the Ferris State Hockey Blueline Club president, is the 25th recipient of the Pete Peterson Bulldog Pride Award which is presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated loyalty and unselfish support of Bulldog Athletics.

The Pete Peterson Bulldog Pride Award is named in honor of former Ferris State Athletics Director and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Commissioner Pete Peterson (1964-79). The award, which was founded in the 1981-82 season, was reinstated following the 2002-03 athletics season after a seven-year absence.  Coaches and athletics department staff nominate individuals to be considered which are selected from alumni, community members, university faculty or staff, and fans. A committee from the administration staff of intercollegiate athletics determined the award recipient.

Courtney has played an active role for many years supporting the Ferris State Hockey program as the Blueline Club president.  In addition, he annually serves as the master of ceremonies for the hockey postseason awards banquet and has assisted over the years by filling in as the public address announcer at selected home contests.

"While there are many deserving recipients of this award, few have shown as much Bulldog pride and support for Ferris  State Athletics and the Bulldog Hockey program over the years as Kevin Courtney," said FSU Athletics Director Perk Weisenburger. "He's been a great leader as the president of our Blueline Club and played an active role for many years in drawing support for our hockey program and department throughout the community.  We're excited to honor him as this year's recipient of this outstanding award."

Courtney has also played a key role in spearheading the annual Little Kevin Charity Softball game that is played each year in conjunction with the Bulldog Hockey Alumni Golf Outing. He's also assisted other Bulldog programs in raising funds each year as part of a Haunted Halloween maze project held at his Four Greens Farm.

Additionally, Courtney has been a key community leader and is the former Big Rapids public safety director along with serving as a Mecosta County Commissioner.  He earned a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice at Ferris State.

"We're appreciative of all of Kevin's efforts in support of Bulldog Hockey," said head coach Bob Daniels.  "He's had a tremendous influence in promoting our program and building support throughout the community and been heavily involved in leading the Blueline Club. Certainly, he's played a big part in the success we've achieved and very deserving of this honor."

Courtney was one of several key contributors to Ferris State Athletics nominated this year by members of the Bulldog coaching and support staff.  He joins a long list of dedicated Bulldog supporters as recipients of the annual award.
