Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University sophomore Laurent Galarneau (Quebec,Canada/Demortagne) of the Bulldog men's tennis team has picked up this week's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Athlete Of The Week Award for his efforts last week.
Galarneau helped the Bulldogs remain unbeaten in GLIAC play this season with two conference wins in weekend action. Overall, he posted a 2-1 singles mark at the number one flight in three outings last week with the lone loss coming to Ross VanderPloeg of Divsion I Western Michigan. He was also 2-1 in doubles play with the only setback being a 9-7 decision against the Broncos.
Against GLIAC competition, Galarneau posted decisive wins in both singles and doubles action against both Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech. He won his singles contests by 6-1, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-1 margins while teaming with Razvan Mag for 8-2 and 8-6 doubles triumphs against LSSU and MTU, respectively.
The duo of Galarneau and Mag is ranked among the region's best and beat a fellow top 10 regional tandem in MTU's Felipe Dos Santos and Pedro Rodriguez on Sunday as FSU improved to 5-0 in the GLIAC and 8-2 overall with the only two setbacks coming to D1 members Toledo and WMU.
A year ago, Galarneau claimed the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Region Rookie of the Year honor along with the GLIAC Freshman of the Year distinction as the Bulldog men's squad captured the GLIAC Tournament Championship for the first time in 13 years.
This weekend, the Bulldogs, under first-year head coach Chad Berryhill, will try to remain unbeaten in league play as they hit the road for three matches. FSU visits Lake Erie on Thursday (March 28) followed by matches at both Walsh and Malone on Friday and Saturday (March 29-30), respectively.
