Ferris State's Sergiu Laza Picks Up GLIAC Men's Tennis Weekly Honor

Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University men's tennis player Sergiu Laza was recognized as this week's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Athlete of the Week for his efforts on the court.

Laza was unbeaten for the Bulldogs in a key GLIAC match against Wayne State last Wednesday (April 3) in the Motor City.  He picked up one of FSU's two singles wins on the day at the number two flight in the lineup by beating WSU's Mohamed Fazyl Kechai.  Laza won the first set 7-5 and was leading the second frame 4-0 when it was stopped and he picked up the victory by retirement.

Laza also paired up with senior Tyler Marengo to record a 8-5 win in doubles play at the second flight, which marked FSU's lone doubles victory of the day.

Currently, he's 11-2 overall in singles action this year, including an impressive 8-0 mark in conference play, and is also unbeaten (7-0) in GLIAC doubles competition.

Laza and the Bulldogs are in action today (April 9) with another key league tilt against the Northwood Timberwolves in Midland.

The Bulldogs then return home to host West Michigan rival Grand Valley State on Friday (April 12) in their final league regular-season home contest at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center.  Match time is set for 12 p.m. (ET).
