Men's Tennis Opens ITA Regional Championships With Strong Showing
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis team opened first day action at the 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Great Lakes Regional with a strong showing on Friday (Sept. 20) at Orchard Hills in the Grand Rapids area.
In the top flight of the singles (A draw), FSU's Laurent Galarneau moved into round three with a pair of victories. Meanwhile, Sergei Laza won his opening match before falling in the second round of the event.
Otto Keresztes and Jose Calero both dropped their opening match in the championship A singles draw. Keresztes came back to win his opening consolation match and continued to stay alive in the consolation round.
In the regional B singles competition, Ricky Symanski fell in round one while Will Huntington dropped his first match as well. Meanwhile, Aaron Dial and Laurent Mailloux both continued on with three wins as each reached the quarterfinal round.
Hayden Cramer won two matches before falling in the third round of the B singles draw.
Symanski bounced back to win two matches in the consolation portion of the B draw and remains alive.
In doubles play in the championship division, Galarnau and Laza moved into the third round on Saturday with two wins and are still contending for championship honors. Dial and Kersztes won their first match before dropping into the consolation draw while Symanski and Cramer fell in the first round before winning a consolation match.
In B doubles, the tandem of Huntington and Calero fell in the opening round.
The regional event continues on Saturday before wrapping up on Sunday.
