Leading Off: The Ferris State University softball team will conclude the regular season portion of its 2010 schedule this Saturday (May 1) against the Grand Valley State Lakers in Allendale, Mich. The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader gets underway with game one at 2 p.m. (EDT) proceeded by the second game at 4 p.m. (EDT).
Ferris State Record: Ferris State is currently 24-16 overall with a 15-9 GLIAC mark this season. FSU has compiled a 15-7 record this April. The Bulldogs gained a league road doubleheader split against Northwood this Tuesday (April 27), dropping the opener 4-0 before rallying for a come-from-behind 7-6 victory over the Timberwolves in the second game. Ferris State is presently 5-7 at home, 10-2 on the road, and 9-7 at neutral site encounters this spring.

Ferris State - Keri Becker (Saginaw Valley State, 1995), 13th season, 407-253-1 (.616). Becker, the all-time winningest coach in Ferris State's Softball history, has guided the Bulldogs to three (1998, 1999, and 2008) NCAA Division II National Softball Championship Tournament appearances. The 1998 squad placed third nationally while the 1999 team set a school record for single-season victories (46 total). The 2008 squad tied for fifth-place honors after capturing the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional title. Becker, who has been recognized as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (GLIAC) Coach of the Year three times (1997, 2003, and 2008) was a member of the 2008 National Fastpitch Coaches Association's (NFCA)/NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Coaching Staff of the Year. Becker recently earned her 400th career coaching win in the Bulldogs' 4-1 home decision over Tiffin (April 17) at Big Rapids, Mich.
Becker Among The Best: Prior to this 2010 season, FSU head coch Keri Becker ranked 45th among the NCAA Division II's active coaches in victories (393) and was 47th in winning percentage (.618). She was also listed 52nd nationally by percentage among the winningest all-time coaches in NCAA Division II entering this campaign.

All-Time Series: Ferris State is 36-73-0 vs. Grand Valley State. The teams split a conference doubleheader earlier this season (April 14) at FSU with Grand Valley State prevailing 1-0 in the opener before the Bulldogs claimed a 2-0 win in the second game.
Bulldog Bites: Senior designated player-pitcher Rhea Flores (Dearborn Heights/Southgate Anderson) has hit safely in 25 contests this season. . . Sophomore third baseman Makenzi Peterson (Big Rapids) has compiled three two-hit game performances in her last four outings. She has garnered two hits apiece in a twinbill at Wayne State (April 25) and at Northwood (April 27) . . . Freshman catcher Liz Hamming (Hudsonville) is batting .800 in her last five games with four hits in five at bats, which included her first collegiate home run (two-run shot) in a win at Saginaw Valley State (April 24) . . . Freshman first baseman-outfielder Lindsey Pettit (Portland) has two hits in her last two at bats both against Northwood (April 27). She totaled two hits in her previous 11 official plate appearances.
Conference Weekly Honor: Senior Kayle Stevenson (Holland/West Ottawa) has been named this week's GLIAC Pitcher of the Week (April 26) for her performance in last week's action on the diamond. Stevenson compiled a 3-0 record with a 0.67 earned run average in 21.0 innings as the Bulldogs went 5-2 for the week. The southpaw tossed a three-hit shutout in a complete-game 2-0 league win at nationally 17th-ranked Saginaw Valley State last Saturday (April 24) in a two-game series sweep. She then scattered five hits in FSU's 2-1 conference triumph versus ninth-ranked Wayne State on Sunday (April 25).
100 Hits Club: A pair of seniors, Rhea Flores and outfielder Rachel Wade (Canton) both registered the 100th base hit in their collegiate career this past week. Flores recorded a single at Saginaw Valley State last Saturday (April 24) while Wade reached the milestone with a single in Sunday's (April 25) matchup at Wayne State.
Undefeated: Kayle Stevenson is 7-0 in her last eight appearances with a 1.14 earned run average and 33 strikeouts in 49.1 innings during that period. Stevenson has pitched six complete games while recording two shutouts and allowing only a .190 batting average by the opposition.
Effective Thrower: Rhea Flores has notched a 6-0 record in the pitching circle this season in 13 appearances. She has a team-leading 1.07 earned run average to go along with 29 strikeouts while holding the opposition to a .188 batting average during the Bulldogs' 40 contests to date. A season ago thru 40 outings, Flores was 0-0 with a 3.11 earned run average and seven strikeouts in nine innings of action.
National Statistics Leaders: Ferris State ranks 37th among this week's NCAA Division II statistical leaders in earned run average (2.02) through games of April 25. The Bulldogs are listed 57th in fielding percentage (.963), 78th in win-loss percentage (.605), 82nd in triples per game (0.18), and 116th in stolen bases per game (0.95). Individually, Kayle Stevenson ranks 37th in hits allowed per seven innings (3.15), 43rd in shutouts (5.0), and 60th in earned run average (1.82). Rhea Flores and freshman pitcher Dana Bowler (Lockport, Ill.) are both tied for 60th place in saves (2.0). Bowler is also 109th in shutouts (3.0) and 130th in strikeouts (104.0).
Regional Rankings: Ferris State remained 10th place in the third 2010 NCAA Division II Midwest Region Rankings as released Wednesday (April 28) by the NCAA-II Softball Committee. The Bulldogs were also listed 10th in the previous two rankings polls (April 14 and 21). FSU had posted a 21-12 in-region record through games of April 26. The top eight teams in each of the eight NCAA-II regions will qualify for the NCAA Regional Tournament (May 14-16). Selections to the NCAA-II Regional Championships will be announced on Monday, May 10, at 10 a.m. (EDT) via a webcast selection show on NCAA.com.
All-League Performers: Ferris State returns three All-GLIAC players from the 2009 season led by second baseman Amanda Harrington (St. Joseph/Stevensville-Lakeshore), who earned first-team recognition. Designated player Rhea Flores and pitcher Kayle Stevenson both attained second-team laurels.
High Expectations: Ferris State is listed among other teams receiving votes in the 2010 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top 25 Preseason Poll. The Bulldogs received eight points in the national poll to finish two points behind Ashland and Augustana (S.D.). The national poll, which was released on Jan. 27 by the NFCA, is voted on by 16 NCAA-II head coaches with two representing each of the eight NCAA regions.
Looking Back: The 2009 Bulldogs concluded the season with a 35-10 overall record, which included a second-place tying 18-4 GLIAC mark. Ferris State concluded the campaign ranked 22nd nationally in the NFCA's final Division II Top 25 Poll with 81 points. FSU's 35 victories matched the program's fourth highest single-season wins output. Ferris has won at least 30 contests in a campaign nine times within the school's annals.
Ferris State In The NCAA Tournament: FSU made its seventh NCAA-II Regional Tournament appearance in 2009 and its fourth trip in the last five years. The Bulldogs compiled a 2-2-0 mark in the double-elimination 2009 sub-Midwest Regional Tourney (March 8 & 10) held at University Center, Mich. Ferris State was crowned Great Lakes Regional Tournament champions in 2008 and went on to a fifth-place tying showing at the National Softball Championships in Houston, Texas. The Bulldogs, who are 24-13 all-time in NCAA Tournament competition, have made three national tournament appearances (1998, 1999, and 2008) to date in their program's history. The 1998 team posted a 3-2 tourney mark en route to placing third in Ferris' national tourney debut.
On Deck: The Bulldogs will compete in the 2010 GLIAC Softball Tournament next weekend, May 7-9, at the Emerson Park Softball Complex in Midland, Mich.
