Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad kept its momentum going as the Bulldogs posted their third-straight win with a 72-60 victory over Lake Superior State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action on Saturday (Feb. 16) afternoon at FSU's Jim Wink Arena.
FSU, which had dropped four games in a row prior to the current streak, kept pace in the GLIAC North Division as the Bulldogs improved to 13-9 overall and 12-7 in the conference.
Ferris State used a big first half run to bolt out to a 38-21 halftime advantage. The Bulldogs shot 51.9% in the opening frame and held LSSU to only 29.6% shooting for the opening period.
In the second half, the Bulldogs withstood an early Lake Superior State run and eventually pushed the lead to as many as 20 points with five minutes to play. The Lakers managed to cut the margin down to only nine points in the closing minutes, but could get no closer in dropping to 5-18 overall and 4-15 in conference play with their ninth-straight setback.
Redshirt freshman guard Katie Mavis dropped in a game-high 19 points for the Bulldogs and sank six-of-nine shots from the floor in leading FSU. Junior forward Ashley Rando tallied 16 points in the win while junior guard Sarah DeShone contributed 12 points in the victory.
Ferris State finished with a 45.6% shooting effort and the Bulldogs hit seven-of-16 (43.8%) three's in addition to making all 13 of their free throw attempts. They also limited LSSU to only 40.4% overall and the Lakers were only five-of-13 (38.5%) beyond the arc along with 13-of-21 (61.9%) from the line.
The Bulldogs led most of the day as the lead changed hands only twice. Ferris State held a decisive 37-29 margin on the glass and grabbed 16 offensive boards to 13 for the Lakers, which led to a 17-12 margin in second chance production.
Additionally, the Bulldogs also forced 19 turnovers and came away with nine steals in the contest. FSU also distributed the ball well as evidenced by 15 assists, including four from DeShone and three by sophomore center Hannah Hoffman off the bench. She also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Lake Superior State, which fell to FSU 74-71 earlier this year in Sault Ste. Marie, was paced by Candice LaCross' team-high 13 points. Raven Trammell added 10 points in the loss.
The victory was Ferris State's fourth in a row against the Lakers.

The women's game is slated for an 8 p.m. (ET) tipoff and will be aired live on Sunny 97.3 FM and the Bulldog Sports Network online at FerrisStateBulldogs.com.
