Before becoming a member of the women's basketball team, Hess received the volleyball team's Coaches Award in 2010. During the 2011 campaign, Hess saw action in 21 different sets over 14 matches and helped the team to a league championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance.

The following year, the Grand Rapids native made the decision to play both basketball and volleyball before switching completely. For women's basketball her first year, she played in 23 games while averaging 28.7 minutes and 6.7 points a game in 2012-13.

Currently, Hess is fifth on the team for free throws with 25 made and fifth for rebounds with 71 so far this season. The team remains in contention for a potential GLIAC Tournament berth pending the outcome of the final four games of the regular-season. They will host Wayne State this Thursday (Feb. 20) night at Wink Arena before traveling to Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Feb. 22) in GLIAC play.

According to Kara

Why did you decide to come to Ferris?

"It was originally for volleyball; I played for my first three years and then played basketball. It was a good fit here, especially the distance. It's only an hour away, so far enough but not too far because I love my family!"

Why did you decide to choose basketball over volleyball?

"I knew I could develop more with basketball. I still love my volleyball girls though and live with them. I just love everyone!"

What were the difficulties with playing multiple sports?

"The hardest part was deciding when to practice what in the off-seasons and what skills needed the most attention and when. I also felt I was constantly missing out, but it was still awesome."

Highlight of your career at Ferris State?

"It would have to be during my first year of volleyball when we won the GLIAC Championship. We stormed the court and I still remember hugging Ashley Huntey and Lisa Tobiczyk."

What's your favorite part about being on the basketball team?

"My favorite part is the girls on the team without a doubt. We just hang out and we're like a family."

What's your earliest basketball memory?

"When I was a young buck I participated in AAU basketball with some of my friends. One memory I have is when we went to Indiana Gym Rat, there was a huge statue with the world's tallest man, and one of my friends won the game by shooting in the wrong basket."

Do you have any hobbies?

"I love outdoor activities, like wakeboarding which is a favorite. Also, biking, I love my bicycle. I mostly just like staying active in my free time."
