Big Rapids, Mich - The Ferris State University women's tennis program announced today the addition of yet another prep tennis standout in Sydney Berens (Zeeland/Holland Christian). She will embark on her freshman campaign with the Bulldogs this fall under second-year head coach Chad Berryhill.
Berens competed at number two singles for her Holland Christian High School squad and was instrumental in guiding the Maroons to a top-five ranking in the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division 3 girl's state listing in 2012. She was tabbed as a two-star recruit according to TennisRecruiting.com as well as being ranked among the nation's top 1,000 prep players by TennisRecruiting.net.
"Sydney's another important addition to our program," said Berryhill. "We're excited she's decided to become a Bulldog and expecting her to play a key role in our quest to rank among the league and nation's top collegiate programs."
The daughter of Scott and Mitzi Berens, Sydney has trained with a Ferris State Professional Tennis Management (PTM) alumnus in Mark Doren at the MVP Sport Club in Holland. She's also been listed among the top 30 prep players in the state of Michigan.
The 6-2 Berens also has an older sibling who already competes in intercollegiate athletics at Ferris State in her sister Libby Berens, who's a member of the Bulldog women's golf program.
Ferris State finished the 2012-13 season with a 12-9 overall record and a 9-5 showing in the Great Lakes Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The bulk of FSU's lineup is expected back for the 2013-14 campaign, which gets underway this fall in early September.
