Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's indoor track and field team sent selected student-athletes to the squad's first competition of the season on Friday (Dec. 6) at the Grand Valley State Early Bird meet in Allendale.

The non-scoring event was hosted by GVSU at the Laker Turf Building and included athletes from schools at all levels throughout the region.

It served as a first opportunity for athletes to hit the track with the bulk of indoor competition beginning in early January.  FSU had three national provisional qualifying performances.

FSU senior Alyssa Osika claimed the women's mile run (5:13.44) with sophomore Ashley Hamilton earning runner-up honors in the same race (5:21.91).

Senior Anna Rudd was fourth in the 5,000 meters (16:51.23) and topped the NCAA Division II National Provisional qualification standard in her first race of the season.

Freshman Raven Blaser came in eighth in the 200 meters (26.27).

FSU was also eighth in the 4x400-meter relay (4:08.63) with a quartet consisting of Osika, Rachel Wood, Van Klompenberg and Baur.

On the men's side, the Bulldogs had four runners in the 5,000 meters. Senior David Silversmith finished fifth (14:48.94) with a national provisional qualification time while senior Brandon Cushman also surpassed the qualifying mark in placing sixth (14:51.04).

Junior Spencer Gerber was ninth in the race (14:56.86) and senior Andrew Harper placed 11th (15:09.98).

The Bulldogs' Lucas Johnson also competed and was third in the weight throw (53-10.50).
