Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball team will head into its final weekend of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play ranked second in the latest NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Rankings.
The Bulldogs, who are also ranked 24th this week in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II National Poll, previously were ranked first in the region in the initial NCAA-II Midwest Regional Rankings that came out late last week.
Ferris State, which wraps up regular-season play on the road this weekend, posted a 2-1 mark last week in GLIAC action. The Bulldogs dropped a road match at rival Grand Valley State on Tuesday before bouncing back to beat Lake Superior State 3-0 at home on Friday along with a 3-2 win over Saginaw Valley State in FSU's final regular-season home match on Saturday.
Grand Valley State holds down the top spot in this week's regional poll with FSU second, Northwood third, Southern Indiana fourth and Lewis (Ill.) in fifth.
The second five in the regional poll includes Ashland, Truman State (Mo.), Indianapolis, Hillsdale and Rockhurst (Mo.).
The nationally 24th-ranked Bulldogs moved to 20-7 overall and 13-3 in the GLIAC with the two wins last weekend, which included Saturday's "Senior Day" victory over SVSU.
The Bulldogs hit the road for their final two GLIAC regular-season contests this weekend. Both are against teams ranked among the region's top 10 as FSU visits Hillsdale on Friday (Nov. 15) at 7 p.m. (ET) before facing Northwood in Midland on Saturday (Nov. 16) at 3 p.m. (ET).
Ferris State moved into a tie for second place overall in the GLIAC's standings following last week's action. Grand valley State holds a two-match lead over FSU, Northwood, Ashland and Northern Michigan as all four teams are tied at 13-3 in the GLIAC to date.
The top four teams in the conference following this weekend's regular-season play will host GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal-round home matches next Wednesday (Nov. 20) with the top remaining seed then hosting the league tourney semifinals and finals on Nov. 23-24.
After regular-season and conference tournament action is complete, the top eight teams in the region will advance to the NCAA Division II Tournament with the top school likely to host regional action Dec. 5-7.
Ferris State has advanced to the NCAA Tournament each of the last two years and reached the regional semifinal round in both campaigns. Overall, the Bulldogs have advanced to the national tournament 17 times in the program's history.
