Ferris State Battles Michigan Tech In Setback In Final Regular-Season Home Tilt
Postgame Highlights & Interview
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — The Ferris State University men's basketball squad battled one of the region's top squads well on Monday (Feb. 23) before falling to visiting Michigan Tech 79-68 in the final regular-season home matchup at Jim Wink Arena.
The Bulldogs shot 95% from the free-throw line in the setback, converting 19 of 20 attempts, but could not overcome a MTU squad that hit on 13-of-27 (48.1%) three's.
The game commenced with Ferris State gaining an early advantage through junior Owen Hardy's layup assisted by sophomore Tae Boyd at 18:43. Boyd continued to contribute, scoring a layup and later adding a 3-pointer at 7:32, narrowing the gap to 19–15. Despite these efforts, the Huskies maintained a slim lead, as highlighted by standout Marcus Tomashek's 3-pointers, which helped them edge out the Bulldogs 31–29 by the end of the first half. The Huskies led by as many as nine points before FSU trimmed the margin down to two at the break with a spurt in the final three minutes.
Ferris State struggled to maintain momentum, though, facing a strong push from the Huskies. Senior Mykel Bingham's layup at 17:09 of the second half briefly gave the Bulldogs a one-point lead after tying the game with a free throw. Despite efforts, including a Bryce Moore 3-pointer at 11:34, FSU was unable to sustain a lead as MTU responded effectively, extending its advantage. The Bulldogs' attempts to close the gap were countered, and the game concluded with the Huskies securing a 79–68 victory.
Boyd led the offensive charge for Ferris State with 14 points, connecting on six of his 11 field goal attempts. Moore contributed 13 points, including two 3-pointers and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line, while also securing two steals. Junior Chang Hoth was efficient from the charity stripe, converting all seven of his attempts as part of his 12-point performance. Bingham added 11 points and grabbed six rebounds, enhancing the team's defensive presence.
Tomashek led the Huskies' scoring with 27 points, making 6 of 10 from beyond the arc and contributing five assists. Gabe Smith showcased his defensive skills by collecting 10 rebounds and two steals. Nate Abel added 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and also tallied three assists and two steals. Josh Terrian was effective in distribution with six assists and added five points and seven rebounds. Dawson Nordgaard matched Abel with 13 points, shooting 5 of 8 from the field, and recorded a block and a steal.
With the setback, the Bulldogs fell to 10-15 overall and 7-11 in conference action. MTU improved to 23-5 overall and 14-4 atop the GLIAC.
The Bulldogs will play their final two games of the regular season on the road later this week, starting with a Thursday (Feb. 26) night showdown at rival Grand Valley State. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. (ET). FSU then closes the regular season on Saturday (Feb. 28) afternoon at Davenport.
