Ferris State Men's Golf Inks Two West Michigan Prep Standouts
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf program, which made its 12th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance this past spring, recently announced the addition of two incoming talented West Michigan prep standouts.
The Bulldogs inked Ryan Bayer (Comstock Park) and Seth Terpstra (Grandville) as part of their 2014 recruiting class and both will join the program as freshmen this coming fall.
"We're excited to have both Ryan and Seth join our program," said head coach Mike Mignano, who recently completed his seventh season at the Bulldog helm. "It's always great to land top talent in your own backyard in West Michigan and we believe these two have bright futures at the college level."
A three-time all-conference honoree, Bayer was the 2013 Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Individual State Champion and attained all-state accolades. He has also been a two-time all-area honoree at Comstock Park.
"We are thrilled Ryan's joining our men's program next season," said Mignano. "He's had a tremendous career at Comstock Park, including winning the state championship individually as a junior. Ryan works hard on his golf game and we look for him to come in right away and continue the success of our program."
Terpstra's also had a standout career as a prepster, including shooting a school-record 67 score at the 2013 Kent County Classic. The Grandville product was an all-conference and all-area choice a year ago while also posting a fourth-place finish at the 2013 Adams Tour Championship along with a top 15 showing in the 2013 GAM Junior Invitational. Most recently, he earned state runner-up honors after advancing to a playoff for medalist honors as this year's MHSAA State Championships.
"Seth will be a tremendous addition for the men's program," Mignano said. "He has played in some high level events during both his junior and high school career. Seth has the ability to take it low, breaking 70 on several occasions in competition. He's had a great run this spring season and we look for him to come in and be competitive as a freshman."
The additions of Bayer and Terpstra will help the Bulldogs offset the loss of a pair of seniors, including another West Michigan native in Trent Davison (Rockford), who wrapped up his FSU career as a three-time all-conference honoree and a two-time all-region selection.
The Bulldogs, under Mignano's direction, made their 12th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance in men's golf this season. FSU also placed third in the GLIAC South Invitational this spring while winning its own Ferris State Invitational prior to the NCAA Super Regional Championships.
