Ferris State Hockey Suffers 5-1 Setback to #13 Minnesota State in Weekend Opener
Mankato, Minn. – The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team returned from its bye week to face #13 Minnesota State at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center and suffered a 5-1 setback Friday (Dec. 5) in Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) play.
The Bulldogs (3-12-0, 2-7-0 CCHA) mustered only one goal late in the game from John Lundy. Meanwhile, the Mavericks (11-2-4, 8-1-2 CCHA) scored twice in the first and second periods and tacked on one goal in the third.
Jack Smith and Fin Williams scored MSU's first period goals. Smith scored unassisted at 1:32 and Williams tallied his second of the year from Jordan Ronn and Mason LeBel at 15:34.
The Mavericks got a short-handed goal from Jakob Stender at 12:00 in period two. Sawyer Scholl assisted. At 17:13, Tristan Lemyre lit the lamp with a power play conversion. His ninth of the season was assisted by Ralfs Bergmanis and Alex Zetterberg.
Lemyre scored another power play goal at 9:35 in the third period with Smith and Bergmanis assisting. The Mavericks took a 5-0 advantage with the goal.
Lundy scored his second goal of the year at 17:34. Bryce Strand misplayed a puck in the Maverick zone and Lundy skated in to flip a quick wrist shot past MSU netminder Alex Tracy. Lundy's goal was unassisted.
For the game, FSU was 1-3 on the PK and 0-2 on the power play. The Bulldogs had 23 shots on goal, 13 blocked shots and won 20 faceoffs. The Mavericks had 27 shots on goal, 14 blocked shots and won 29 faceoffs.
Noah Rupprecht drew the start between the pipes for Ferris State and stopped 22 shots in the loss. Christopher Lie led the squad with three blocked shots and Nic Belpedio blocked two. Carter Rapalje had six shots on goal to pace the team and also had a four-game point streak snapped.
FSU will go for the split against Minnesota State Saturday (Dec. 6). Puck drop is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. (ET) at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center with pregame coverage beginning on Sunny 97.3 FM at 6:30 p.m. (ET).
