Ferris State Hockey Falls 4-3 to #18 Minnesota State in Final January Game

Big Rapids, Mich. – The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team suffered a 4-3 setback to the #18 Minnesota State University Mavericks Saturday (Jan. 31) in Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) play.
The Bulldogs (4-24-0, 3-17-0 CCHA) jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Mavericks (15-8-5, 11-6-3 CCHA) scored four unanswered goals in the second period to take a lead of their own. FSU got a power play goal from John Lundy in the third but were unable to find an equalizing goal.
Jack Silich put the Bulldogs up 1-0 58 seconds into the game. Emerson Goode cleared the Bulldog zone with a pass up to Silich at center ice who skated past the Maverick defense and ripped a shot past MSU goaltender Alex Tracy. Silich's third goal of the season came from Goode, his first assist.
Max Dukovac scored his first power play goal this year at 2:21 in period two. Caden Brown skated across the top of the circles and passed across to Dukovac for a one-time shot that beat Tracy. Dukovac's fourth goal this year put FSU up 2-0 and Brown got his third assist.
Minnesota State went on to score the next four goals. First, Mason LeBel scored at 6:48 with assists going to Fin Williams and Jordan Ronn. Then, Alex Zetterberg converted a power play goal at 13:16 from Ean Somoza and Luigi Benincasa.
Campbell Cichosz scored unassisted at 14:06 to give the Mavericks their first lead of the night 3-2. Reid Morich scored his third goal of the weekend at 16:49 on the power play with Rylan Bonkowski and Ralfs Bergmanis assisting.
Lundy brought the Bulldogs back within one goal at 5:58 in the third. Tyler Schleppe won a faceoff that Max Itagaki tipped back to Lundy for a one-timer in the high slot that beat Tracy. Lundy's 15th collegiate power play goal was his third overall goal this year. Schleppe got his sixth assist and Itagaki got his 10th.
FSU pulled starting goaltender Noah Rupprecht late for the extra attacker but were unable to find a game-tying goal as Minnesota State completed the weekend sweep.
For the game, FSU and MSU each had 32 shots on goal. The Mavericks won 32 faceoffs compared to 30 for the Bulldogs and blocked 14 shots to FSU's 10.
Individually, Carter Rapalje finished with a game-high eight shots on goal. Valtteri Piironen and Trevor Taulien each blocked three shots and Josh Zary led the Bulldogs with 11 faceoff wins.
Rupprecht finished with 28 saves on 32 shots faced. Tracy stopped 29 shots in a winning effort.
The Bulldogs will be on the road next weekend to take on Bemidji State. Puck drop for Friday's (Feb. 6) game is scheduled for 8:07 p.m. (ET) with pregame coverage beginning on Sunny 97.3 FM at 7:30 p.m. (ET).
