D1 UPSET! Ferris State Men's Tennis Notches First Win Over D1 Opponent In At Least 20 Years!
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis squad earned its first win over a NCAA Division I opponent in at least more than 20 years as the Bulldogs knocked off Western Michigan by a 5-2 score on Friday (Feb. 20) evening in Kalamazoo.
The Bulldogs, who had fell to WMU at least 21 times in a row going back to 2005, came away with the impressive win to move to 7-1 overall this year.
Ferris State jumped in front early by taking the doubles point from the Broncos, winning at the second and third flights by scores of 6-1 and 6-4, respectively.
In singles action, the Bulldogs got straight-sets wins from Felipe Iser at three singles along with Erik Kovacs at five singles. Andrew Vincler was a three-set winner at six singles and Jose Perez pulled out a three-set win at the second flight in the FSU victory.
"I can't put into words how proud I am of this team," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "We have been spending so much time in practice talking about what it really means to believe in what we can do as a team in an individual sport like tennis. Today, we all felt that belief from the first serve in doubles.
"Taking the doubles point to start the match was a confidence boost this team needed to show that it's possible to beat a team like this," he added. "I could name so many guys on this team that stepped up today, but even all of them will say this was not just one or two guys, it was all 12, even the guys on the bench who people in the parking lot could hear."
Ferris State, which has now won its last six outings in a row, will return to the court on Saturday (Feb. 21) afternoon back at home versus Hillsdale in regional play at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center. Match time is set for 2 p.m. (ET).
