Ferris State Tennis Squads Come Away With Two Big Wins On Memorable Day

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's tennis squad had a big day on Saturday (April 11) as FSU swept Purdue Northwest in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play by identical 6-1 scores at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center.

The Bulldog women celebrated Senior Day on Saturday and came away with an impressive win to open the day before the men hit the court and remained on top of the league standings with a pivotal win over the Pride.

"I'm so proud of our two women's seniors, Ana and Maria Hernandez, who kept their emotions in check today and turned in one of their best performances on court in their time here at Ferris," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "On the men's side, it was an emotional roller coaster.

"We played fantastic doubles, but then Purdue Northwest came out extremely strong in singles," he added. "Throughout the three hours of singles play, it was anyone's match to win. But, the guys really stepped up and finished super strong, which keeps us in first place in the GLIAC heading into next weekend's final regular-season match."

The women swept the doubles round for the first point of the day. In singles play, FSU captured the top five flights in straight-sets to put the Pride away, improving to 11-6 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

The men also took all three doubles flights for the initial point in their match and then claimed victories in the bottom five singles positions. Three of the six singles matches were determined in straight-sets with the Bulldogs coming away with a 3-0 mark in those key decisions. Ferris State moved to 14-3 overall and 5-0 in league play with the triumph.

Both Ferris State teams will play host to Wayne State in the final match of the regular season on Saturday, April 18, at the Racquet and Fitness Center. The women's match begins at 10 a.m. (ET) with the men's contest set for a 2 p.m. (ET) start.
