BULLDOG SWEEP! Ferris State Tennis Squads Close Out Regular Season With Big Day Against WSU
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's tennis teams had a memorable day on Saturday (April 18), sweeping Wayne State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center.
The women opened the day with a 5-2 triumph over the Warriors before the men rallied for a 4-3 victory, securing the program's 22nd all-time GLIAC Regular Season Championship.
In the women's match, Ferris State claimed the doubles point and won four of the six singles positions to move to 12-6 overall and finish league play with a 6-1 mark.
The Bulldog men followed with a thrilling 4-3 win, rallying back for the conference title to conclude league regular-season play with a perfect 6-0 record. FSU fell in doubles, but earned four wins in singles play. The Bulldogs claimed their 22nd all-time conference title by topping the Warriors. Ferris State has now won eight of the last 11 regular-season titles that have been awarded.
Ferris State also won its sixth consecutive men's match this season by beating WSU. The Bulldogs claimed the win thanks to a critical three-set rally from Adrian Catahan at five singles by a 7-5 score to clinch the victory. FSU improved to 15-3 overall this year with the win.
"This was one of the more special days we've had at the Ferris State Racquet facility," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "Both teams played outstanding tennis today. I'm so proud of the hard work and focus that all 22 student-athletes on the men's and women's tennis teams have shown this semester. We still have more to go, but we're going to celebrate this day.
"I can't say enough about Adrian Catahan and his unwavering belief in his abilities today," he added. "With the match tied 3–3, Adrian was down 4–1 in the third set and came back to win 7–5 to clinch the victory."
The GLIAC Tournament will take place Thursday thru Saturday, April 23-25, at the Midland Tennis Center. The Bulldogs will be the number one seed on the men's side and official matchups and information will be announced by the league office soon. FSU will receive a first-round bye as the top seed.
The women's team also secured the number two overall seed with Saturday's triumph and will also earn a first-round bye for the league tournament.
