Ferris State Men's Tennis Falls To Washburn In D2 Sweet Sixteen

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis squad had its season come to a close on Wednesday (May 20) in the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen as the Bulldogs fell to Washburn (Kan.) by a 4-0 score in Surprise, Ariz.

FSU was making its first appearance in the round of 16 in nine years, but the 10th-seeded Bulldogs could not get past the seventh-seeded Ichabods, who moved on to the D2 Elite Eight with the win.

The Bulldogs had their 10-match winning streak halted as Washburn took the doubles points and claimed the first three completed singles matches for the triumph.

In doubles play, the Bulldogs fell by scores of 6-4 and 6-2 at two and three doubles, respectively. The top tandem of Adrian Catahan and Erik Kovacs had a slim 6-5 edge at the top flight when play was stopped as Washburn claimed two of the three flights needed for the initial point.

In singles play, Washburn came away with the win thanks to straight-set decisions at one, four and six singles.

The match took place at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.

Ferris State concluded the year with a 19-4 overall record. FSU made its first trip to the Sweet Sixteen since 2017 and the 12th trip to the round of 16 in school history. This season, the Bulldogs also won both the GLIAC regular season and tournament championships along with claiming a Midwest Region title to advance to the D2 National Championships.
