Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad claimed its first sweep on Wednesday (March 13) at The Spring Games in Florida as the Bulldogs topped both Bemidji State and California (Pa.) in non-league action in Clermont.
FSU, which had Tuesday off, returned to the diamond for morning action and beat BSU 2-0 in a shutout in game one before closing the day with a 4-1 triumph over California in the finale.
In the opener, the Bulldogs broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the top half of the seventh inning to beat the Beavers. FSU totaled eight hits to seven for Bemidji State in the victory.
FSU's Abby Highway got the shutout victory in the circle as she tossed seven scoreless innings of action while giving up only seven hits. She walked two and struck out one in the triumph.
In the seventh, Rebecca Piron accounted for the Bulldogs' two runs as she notched two RBI's. She tallied a pair of hits in the game as did both Kylie Winkels and Logan Fleming. Winkels doubled in the contest and scored once with Sawyer Wightman totalined a hit and a run scored.
Meanwhile, in game two, Ferris State jumped in front first with a run in the fourth inning. After the Vulcans tied the game back up in the top of the sixth, FSU answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame and kept Cal-Pa off the board in the seventh for the win. Ferris State had seven hits to five for California.
The Bulldogs' Connor Proctor earned the game two win as she allowed only a single run on five hits in seven innings of action while compiling two strikeouts.
Ferris State improved to 7-9 overall this season with the sweep and the Bulldogs have now won three of their last five contests in Florida.
FSU returns to the field on Thursday (March 14) against Holy Family (Pa.) at 9 a.m. (ET) followed by a 1:30 p.m. (ET) regional matchup against Hillsdale. FSU then closes the trip with two more games on Friday (March 15).
