Best Ferris State Softball Season In Nearly Three Decades Comes To An End

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team had its best season in nearly three decades come to a close as the Bulldogs did not receive an NCAA Division II Tournament bid on Monday.

The NCAA unveiled the national tournament field and the Bulldogs were left out of the eight-team Midwest Regional field despite finishing the year with a 37-20 overall record, which marked the program's most wins since 1999.

This year, the Bulldogs finished as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) runner-up in regular season play with a 21-7 overall conference mark under head coach Jake Schumann. FSU also placed second in the league postseason tournament, falling to Saginaw Valley State by a 2-1 score in nine innings in the league title game. SVSU was the only league member school to be selected among the eight regional squads for the tournament field.

This past weekend represented the first time in which FSU had competed in the GLIAC Tournament Championship game since 2012 and the runner-up league regular season finish was the program's best since also placing second in 2013.

FSU's 37 total wins this season represented the fourth-most in a single season in school history.

The Bulldogs had only three seniors this season and will return the bulk of the roster for the 2027 campaign.
