Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball sizzled in its 2022-23 home opener on Wednesday (Nov. 16) evening as the Bulldogs rolled past in-state foe Northwood 79-51 inside Jim Wink Arena.
The Bulldogs nailed 15 three-pointers and shot better than 60% from the arc in the opening half en route to the win. Overall, FSU converted 47.5% of its field goals on the evening, including 45.5% (15-33) from long range while improving to 3-0 overall this season.
A trio of FSU players reached double-digits in the win with senior guard Mallory McCartney totaling a game-high 18 points to go with six rebounds and six assists. FSU also got 15 points from freshman Mia Riley along with 12 points by DeShonna Day.
Additionally, freshman Elle Irwin contributed nine points with sophomore Kenzie Bowers scoring eight points and sophomore Grace Sullivan adding seven points to go with seven assists.
Six different Ferris State players hit three's in the game with five notching at least two. McCartney paced FSU with four three's while Riley and Irwin both nailed three apiece.
Ferris State also controlled the glass, out rebounding Northwood 44-37 for the evening. Amaka Unobagha led FSU with nine boards off the bench and senior Chloe Idoni added seven boards to go with six points.
Ferris State took control early, building a 19-13 lead following the first period, and then exploded in the second frame when the Bulldogs outscored the Timberwolves by a 28-7 count. FSU also recorded a 25-16 advantage in the third period, salting the game away.
Defensively, the Bulldogs limited Northwood to only 25.4% shooting overall and NU finished only three-of-23 (13%) from long range. The Timberwolves did make 16-of-21 (76.2%) free throws. Makenzie Todd led Northwood with 14 points, but was the only NU player to reach double-figures.
FSU also came up with nine steals in the game and five blocked shots while dishing out 22 assists overall.
Northwood fell to 2-1 on the year as NU entered the game coming off back-to-back wins to open the year against Saginaw Valley State and Lake Superior State.
The Bulldogs will hit the road to face Illinois-Springfield in regional action on Saturday, Nov. 19, with tipoff set for 2 p.m. (ET) in Illinois.
