Bulldogs Fall In Top 20 National Showdown As GLIAC Play Opens At Wink Arena

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad suffered its first setback of the season, falling to nationally top-ranked rival Grand Valley State 78-70 on Thursday (Dec. 1) night inside FSU's Jim Wink Arena.

The visiting Lakers jumped out to a commanding 20-5 first-quarter lead before the 20th-ranked Bulldogs responded in the top 20 national showdown.

FSU trimmed the lead all the way down to two points on several occasions, but could not overcome the Lakers as GVSU pulled out the win, moving to 6-0 overall this year.

Ferris State fell to 5-1 with its first setback of the season in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opener for both teams.

Senior standout Chloe Idoni had a big game for the Bulldogs, scoring a contest-best 26 points while adding eight rebounds. Senior guard Mallory McCartney added 18 points and junior DeShonna Day scored 10 points for FSU.

The Bulldogs finished shooting 40% from the floor and were five-of-28 (17.9%) from long range along with 13-of-17 (76.5%) at the line.

For Grand Valley State, Paige Vanstee totaled 15 points off the bench in leading the Lakers' attack. Hannah Kulas added 14 points, Ellie Droste scored 13 points and Nicole Kaman chipped in with 11 points.

GVSU shot 51% from the floor and made 25-of-31 (80.6%) free throws in the win.

The Bulldogs will host Davenport in league play on Sunday (Dec. 4) starting at 1 p.m. (ET) inside Wink Arena.
