Ferris State Opens Up Early Lead Before Falling To SVSU On The Road

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball team jumped in front early, but could not hold on as Saginaw Valley State rallied for a 65-47 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) decision on Thursday (Jan. 19) night at O'Neill Arena in University Center.

The Bulldogs took a 14-point lead in the second quarter and held a five-point edge at halftime before the host Cardinals responded by outscoring FSU 37-14 n the second half for the win. FSU fell to 11-6 overall and 4-4 in the GLIAC with the setback.

Saginaw Valley State shot 44.4% for the game, including better than 50% in each of the final three periods while holding FSU to only 30.2% shooting for the night.

Ferris State got a team-high 16 points from sophomore Kenzie Bowers, but she was the lone FSU player to reach double-figure scoring.

Meanwhile, Kaitlyn Zarycki and Tori DePerry provided the one-two punch for the Cardinals with 35 and 22 points, respectively.

The Bulldogs were out rebounded 41-32 overall and FSU finished with 22 turnovers in the setback. The Cardinals had 16 turnovers overall and outscored FSU 48-22 inside the paint along with 21-12 off of turnovers.

With the win, the Cardinals improved to 9-9 overall and 4-4 in the GLIAC.

FSU will try to get back on track Saturday (Jan. 21) as the Bulldogs head to Wayne State for a 1 p.m. (ET) GLIAC contest in Detroit.
