Ferris State Closes Out Regular-Season With Road Setback At GVSU

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball team finished off Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular-season play with a 72-55 road setback at rival Grand Valley State on Saturday (Feb. 25) afternoon inside the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale.
The Bulldogs and Lakers battled to a low scoring opening period with GVSU owning a 12-6 edge after the first 10 minutes. In the second quarter, Grand Valley State notched 21 points to 13 for the Bulldogs, building a 33-19 halftime margin.
Ferris State battled in the second half, but the Lakers proved to be too much as they increased the lead to as many as 24 points in the third period before FSU came out on top in the fourth by an 18-15 margin to pull closer.
The Bulldogs got 15 points from senior guard Mallory McCartney to go with 12 points from Chloe Idoni and 10 by Elle Irwin.
Grand Valley State was paced by Nicole Kamin and Hannah Kulas with 12 points each in a balanced effort. Rylie Bisballe chipped in with 10 points.
The Lakers finished shooting 47.5% from the floor compared to FSU's 35.6% figure. GVSU went five-of-21 (23.8%) from long range with the Bulldogs netting a seven-of-23 (30.4%) showing. Overall, Ferris State made 16-of-17 (94.1%) free throws and the Lakers went 11-of-21 (52.4%) at the foul line.
Grand Valley State owned a 41-26 rebounding margin and came away with 19 offensive boards in the game while forcing 22 FSU turnovers, including 17 in the first half. The Lakers outscored FSU 44-18 inside the paint for the day.
With the setback, Ferris State finished the regular-seaosn with a 16-11 overall record and a 9-9 GLIAC slate, coming in sixth overall in the league standings.
The Bulldogs will visit third-seeded Parkside for the GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals on Wednesday, March 1, with tipoff set for 6:30 p.m. (ET) in Kenosha, Wis.
