Caledonia, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad got off to a hot start and cruised to a 87-50 victory over Davenport on Thursday (Feb. 6) evening in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on the road.
FSU opened up a 14-4 lead only six minutes into the game. The Bulldogs extended the lead to 25-10 after the opening quarter of play. The lead grew to 36-14 midway thru the second period and Ferris State held a 43-19 lead at intermission.
Ferris State pushed the margin to 79-38 with 5:07 remaining in the game and led by as many as 41 points in the outing.
Junior Mia Riley recorded a rare triple-double for FSU with 18 points, 10 rebound and 10 assists while adding five steals. Junior Emma Schierbeek tallied a game-high 24 points and made seven three's while junior Mya Hiram had 23 points.
The Bulldogs knocked down 15-of-28 (53.6%) three's and hit all 10 of their free throws in the win while shooting 47.7% from the floor. Additionally, FSU forced 17 turnovers and outscored DU 21-7 in points off those miscues.
On the glass, the Bulldogs posted a 38-36 rebounding advantage and Ferris State held DU to only 34.5% shooting. The Panthers made only four-of-19 (21.1%) long range tries and finished six-of-nine (66.7%) at the free throw stripe.
Davenport was led by Lillee Gustafson with 13 points and Ellie Toney chipped in 10 points in the defeat, which dropped the Panthers to 4-17 overall and 2-11 in the GLIAC.
With the win, the Bulldogs moved to 16-6 overall and 10-3 in conference action.
FSU improved to 10-1 all-time against Davenport and the Bulldogs have now won the last 10 matchups in the series.
Ferris State will visit West Michigan rival and nationally top-ranked Grand Valley State on Saturday (Feb. 8) with tipoff set for 1 p.m. (ET) in Allendale.
