GLIAC CHAMPIONS! Ferris State Women's Golf Claims Sixth Conference Title; Shannon Earns Medalist Honors

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's golf team claimed its sixth Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship in program history on Sunday (April 19), earning the league crown at Stonehedge Golf Club in Augusta, Mich.

The Bulldogs finished second overall in the stroke play portion of the league championships with the top two teams then advancing to Sunday afternoon's final round in a head-to-head medal match play showdown.

In the finals, the Bulldogs beat archival Grand Valley State by a score of 3.5-1.5 to claim the title. It marked FSU's second GLIAC Championship in the last four years as the Bulldogs' 2023 league crown was its first since 2007.

In addition to winning the league championship, senior Kamryn Shannon also earned individual medalist honors with the low score in the 54-hole stroke play portion of the conference championship.

In the finals matchup versus GVSU, FSU's Isabel Kelly started off the round and beat the Lakers' Heida Rakel Rafnsdottir by a stroke for the initial Bulldog point. Ashley Thomasma followed for FSU with a three-shot win over GVSU's Evelyn Park. Grand Valley State's Lea Stotz topped Ferris State's Lizzie Anderson by four with Kylie Walker battling to a draw against Charlotte Goersch of GV. The final match came down to Shannon, who earned a 5UP win over the Lakers' Rachael Krieger to clinch the title.

The Bulldogs started off Sunday with a three-stroke lead over GVSU in the stroke play portion of the championships following day one play on Saturday. The Lakers carded a 292 team figure on Sunday morning over the final 18 holes of play with FSU netting a 299 figure to finish four shots back at 899 overall. However, the two teams were well in front of third-place Saginaw Valley State, which scored a 917 figure for the 54 holes in the eight-team field.

Individually, Shannon claimed medalist honors with a four-over par effort for the three rounds, scoring a +1 total of 73 on Sunday. Thomasma finished 10th at 227 after shooting a 75 on Sunday while Anderson tied for 11th at 229 with a final-round 73 score.

The Bulldogs' Kelly came in tied for 21st at 236 with a 78 on Sunday while Walker finished 39th overall. She shot scores of 73 and 74 on Saturday and was near the top of the leaderboard, but did not play in morning action as Paige Anderson took her place in the lineup and shot an 81 for 40th place in the field.

The league championship was the Bulldogs' sixth in program history as FSU also captured the crown in both 2001 and 2002 before the consecutive titles in 2006 and 2007 prior to 2023. Ferris State and GVSU are the only current conference members to have won a league championship since the conference began sponsoring the competition in 2001.

The Bulldogs are currently listed among the region's top squads in the D2 Regional Rankings and the official NCAA Tournament selections will be unveiled on April 26 at NCAA.com.
