Ferris State Women's Golf Starts Strong Before Weather Halts Play At D2 National Championships

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's golf team got off to a strong start on Tuesday (May 12) at the NCAA Division II National Championships before play was suspended due to weather.

The Bulldogs finished the first day of play in seventh place overall among the 18 competing teams with a +9 total thru 9-11 holes of action. FSU had one player finish 11 holes, three others make it thru 10 holes and one with nine holes played before play was halted due to lightning and potential thunderstorms.

The opening day saw only three of the 18 teams complete their round and three of the top four teams on the leaderboard played only 3-6 holes on day one. Texas-Tyler sits at +1 overall with Missouri-St. Louis at +2 and Anderson (S.C.) at +3 following Tuesday's competition.

A trio of Bulldog competitors were all +2 on the day, including senior Kamryn Shannon, who played nine holes. Both Kylie Walker and Ashley Thomasma were two-over thru 10 holes while Lizzie Anderson was +3 after 10 holes of play. Finally, Taylor Musselman sits at +5 following 11 holes of action.

Play in round one will resume early Wednesday morning followed by the second round of competition.

The Bulldogs, who placed third overall last week in the NCAA D2 East Regional to advance to the national championships, are among 18 competing teams vying for the national championship. Eight individuals are also taking part in the event.

The D2 National Championships are being hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic University and the Palm Beach Sports Commission. The field includes the top five teams from the Central Region, the top four teams from the East Region along with the top four teams in the South Region and the top five teams in the West Region. There are a total of 98 golfers in the field.

Each team will compete in 54 holes of play with a round of 18 each day thru Thursday. The top eight teams in the field will then advance to the head-to-head match play quarterfinals on Friday morning with the semifinals slated for Friday afternoon and the championship match scheduled for Saturday.

This year's trip to the national championship finals represents FSU's 11th in school history and second in a row. Last year, the Bulldogs made their first appearance in the national championships in 16 years dating back to 2009. FSU placed 17th overall a season ago at the national championships.
