Ferris State Soccer Ties Roosevelt 1-1 In Lone Outing Of The Weekend

Chicago, Ill. – The Ferris State University women's soccer team played its lone game of the weekend Sunday (Sept. 28) and tied Roosevelt University 1-1 after the Lakers scored a late goal.

The Bulldogs (2-1-4, 2-0-1 GLIAC) led for a majority of the contest, but Roosevelt attempted a corner kick with 2:16 remaining that went off a Bulldog player and into the net for an own goal, tying the game. Grace Sampson had FSU's goal and Korinne Ihrke made seven saves.

FSU struck first at 28:15 when Katherine Welch sent a pass across the field that Isabella Baron tipped to Sampson. She fired a shot off the left post and into the net for her second goal of the season. Baron got her first assist of the year as FSU took a 1-0 lead.

In the first half, Irhke made two saves and the Bulldogs had one shot on goal. FSU attempted three corner kicks while Roosevelt had none.

FSU held the lead throughout much of the second half. Ihrke made five saves as the Bulldogs attempted to close out a victory, but the Lakers got a goal off a corner kick late in the game. Daisy Garcia took the corner kick and placed the ball in the box where it deflected off a Bulldog and into the net. Neither team scored in the remaining two minutes of play, and the Bulldogs recorded their first tie in league play.

For the game, FSU had 10 corner kicks, five shots on goal and 10 fouls. Roosevelt had one corner, seven shots on goal and nine fouls. Roosevelt also received two yellow cards and one red card.

Individually, Welch led FSU with two shots on goal and seven total shot attempts. Baron, Sampson, Bella Vallone, Lauren McCaul and Ella Wolf played 90 minutes. 

The Bulldogs will head on the road next weekend for two contests in the Upper Peninsula. First, Ferris State will take on Northern Michigan on Friday (Oct. 3) at 1 p.m. (ET). FSU will then wrap up the weekend with a Sunday (Oct. 5) contest against Michigan Tech at 12 p.m. (ET). Both games will be streamed live on FloCollege.
