Postgame Interview & Highlights
Big Rapids, Mich.- The Ferris State University women's soccer team returned home after a three-game road trip for a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest against #4 Grand Valley State University and suffered a 2-1 setback at the hands of the Lakers Friday (Oct. 10).
The Bulldogs (3-3-4, 3-2-1 GLIAC) played their first home game in October, taking on the fourth ranked team in the country and top team in the conference. Sophomore goalkeeper Korinne Ihrke got the start and senior forward Haley Buckman scored FSU's goal.
Neither team scored in the first half of play. Ihrke saved all three GVSU shots on goal and the Bulldogs tested Laker goalkeeper Macie Hunter with one shot on frame, which she saved. FSU had four corner kicks and GVSU had two.
Kacy Lauer gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead at 49:27 with her third goal of the year. The Lakers took a corner kick that Mackenzie Ford touched to Lauer for the shot. Ford collected an assist.
At 73:10, Ivy Wilhelm fired a shot from long distance that went crossbar-down into the goal, giving the Lakers a 2-0 advantage.
Buckman scored her second goal of the year at 84:35 on a free kick that came from just outside the box. She fired a shot past Hunter and put the Bulldogs on the board.
FSU was unable to find an equalizing goal and ultimately suffered a 2-1 defeat.
For the game, the Bulldogs had three shots on goal, five corner kicks and seven fouls. The Lakers had six shots on goal, five corner kicks and 16 fouls. They also received three yellow cards.
Individually, Ihrke made four saves in the losing effort. Buckman, Isabella Baron and Bella Vallone had FSU's shots on goal. Vallone, Natalia Leavens, Grace Sampson, Lauren McCaul and Ella Wolf each played 90 minutes.
The Bulldogs will head on the road to face Davenport Sunday (Oct. 12). Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. (ET) from Caledonia with live coverage provided on FloCollege.
