Big Rapids, Mich. - Redshirt freshman quarterback Jason Vander Laan (Frankfort, Ill./Chicago Christian) of the Ferris State University football team has picked up Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Offensive Player of the Week accolades after guiding the Bulldogs to their first win over rival Grand Valley State since 1999.
Vander Laan keyed the Bulldogs to their first triumph over the third-ranked Lakers in 13 years on Saturday night (Oct. 6) at Lubbers Stadium in Allendale. He engineered FSU's comeback from a 17-0 first quarter deficit as the Bulldog offense rolled up 536 total yards in winning the Anchor-Bone Trophy for the first time with a 40-24 win before a crowd of more than 13,000 fans.
The 6-4 rookie ran for 185 yards and two scores on 23 carries, which included a 63-yard touchdown run to tie the contest midway thru the second quarter. He also had the Bulldogs' first touchdown on a six-yard keeper.
In the air, he completed 10-of-17 passes for 79 yards. FSU totaled 457 rushing yards against the Lakers in snapping an 11-game series' losing streak and breaking GVSU's 12-game win streak overall.
To date, Vander Laan currently ranks as the GLIAC's third-leading rusher this season as he is averaging 115.5 yards rushing, which includes two consecutive games of 185 yards or more against two nationally-ranked opponents. He's also eighth in total offense in the conference at 209.8 yards per contest.
With the win over the Lakers, Ferris State improved to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in league play.
