Big Rapids, Mich. - A special silent auction featuring Detroit Red Wings memorabilia will take place this Friday (Nov. 11) night during Ferris State University's home hockey series' opener against Lake Superior State at the Ewigleben Ice Arena.
Proceeds from the silent auction will be used to help provide relief for current Big Rapids High School hockey head coach Tim Blashill, Katrina Wray and her two sons, who sustained a severe fire to their home in mid-October and lost many possessions. In addition to serving as the BRHS coach, Blashill also currently works as the FSU Ice Arena's program and pro shop coordinator.
Opening faceoff between a pair of nationally-ranked teams in the Bulldogs and Lakers is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. (ET) and the silent auction will take place in the concourse of the Ewigleben Ice Arena both before and during the contest.
The Detroit Red Wings have donated various items for the auction, including one Nicklas Lidstrom signed jersey, four tickets to any Red Wings' home game with the execption of the New Year's Eve contest, one Johan Franzen autographed photo and one Jimmy Howard autographed photo.
The silent auction is being organized by the Big Rapids Hockey community, which includes the Big Rapids Area Junior Hockey Association (BRAJHA), the Big Rapids High School hockey team, the Ferris State Hockey program and the FSU Blueline Club in conjunction with the Detroit Red Wings.
The efforts with the Red Wings have been organized thru Bulldog alum and former assistant coach Jeff Blashill, who's Tim's older brother and midst his first season as an assistant coach with the Red Wings. Both Tim and Jeff are also natives of Sault Ste. Marie, which is the home of Lake Superior State.
The auction tables will open prior to the contest and run until bids are closed with 10 minutes to go in the third period.
In addition to the silent auction, the first 500 fans will also receive a foam, limited edition collector's Bulldog Hockey puck, which will be perfect for an office or den.
After Friday's contest, the two teams will square off again on Saturday (Nov. 12) in the series' finale at 7:05 p.m. (ET).
Ferris State currently is ranked eighth nationally this week and owns a 8-2 overall record along with a 4-2 mark in CCHA action. The Bulldogs swept Bowling Green State in league play this past weekend on the road by winning 4-0 and 5-3 at the BGSU Ice Arena in Bowling Green, Ohio.
Meanwhile, Lake Superior State is also off to a hot start and is 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the CCHA heading into the weekend series. LSSU is ranked 11th nationally this week.
Tickets for the weekend series are on sale and can be purchased by contacting the FSU Athletics Ticket Office at 231-591-2888. The FSU Athletics Ticket Office's normal hours of operation are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (ET). The ticket office will also offer extended hours until 7 p.m. (ET) on Wednesday's throughout the season and be open on hockey home game Saturday's at 12 p.m. (ET).
