Big Rapids, Mich. - The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) has tabbed two Ferris State University men's ice hockey student-athletes as league players of the week following a sweep over Notre Dame this past weekend (Feb. 10-11) in a home-and-home series.
Senior goaltender Taylor Nelson (Regina, Saskatchewan) was named the conference's Goaltender of the Week and junior forward Kyle Bonis (Lindsay, Ontario) earned the Postgame Offensive Player of the Week honor as announced by the league office on Monday (Feb. 13).
Nelson stopped 31 shots on goal and earned a shutout in Friday's 3-0 win over the Fighting Irish in South Bend. In Saturday's contest at Big Rapids, Nelson turned away 27 shots as the Bulldogs won 5-1. Nelson was the backbone to the penalty-kill unit that went 9-for-10 on the weekend.
This week's selection marks the second time Nelson has received the honor in his collegiate career as he also earned the CCHA Goaltender of the Week honor once before in his sophomore campaign (12/7/09).
Bonis scored the first two Bulldog goals in Friday's 3-0 win and tallied an assist on the third goal of the game. He then went on to add the game-winning assist in Saturday's 5-1 victory. He finished the weekend with a plus-four efficiency rating.
This marks the second time Bonis has earned the weekly honor this season as he was also named Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 10.
The nationally first-ranked Bulldogs, under 20th-year head coach Bob Daniels, hold a current record of 20-8-4 and are 14-6-4 in the conference. Ferris State has gone unbeaten in the New Year, posting a 9-0-3 record in that stretch.
The Bulldogs are home this weekend (Feb. 17-18) for a two-game CCHA series against the Bowling Green Falcons. The puck is slated to drop at 7:05 p.m. (EDT) for both contests inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena.
