Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University men's ice hockey senior goalie Taylor Nelson continues to reap the rewards of an outstanding weekend of action as he has been tabbed as one of this week's College Sports 360 Primetime Performers of the Week.
A total of six impressive competitors were chosen as College Sports 360 Primetime Pacesetters of the Week for all of Division I athletics by the online website found at www.collegesports360.com. Eleven others, including Nelson, help comprise the Primetime Performers of the Week list from a sampling of 24 sports that were in action the week of Feb. 6-12.
The CollegeSports360 Primetime Performer awards program goes beyond simply the raw stats or results, instead taking into account the quality of the opposition, contribution to team success and other situational factors (such as all-around play, leadership, clutch efforts, adversity overcome, etc.).
Among the players on this week's list along with Nelson was Duke University freshman basketball guard Austin Rivers, who hit a game-winning three-point shot in the Blue Devils' thrilling rivalry win over North Carolina last week.
Nelson stopped 31 shots on goal and earned a shutout in last Friday's (Feb. 10) 3-0 win over the Fighting Irish in South Bend. In Saturday's (Feb. 11) contest at Big Rapids, Nelson turned away 27 shots as the Bulldogs won 5-1. Nelson was the backbone to the penalty-kill unit that went 9-for-10 on the weekend.
Due to his play last weekend, Nelson was earlier named this week as the Central College Hockey Association (CCHA) Goaltender of the Week. His play also helped FSU become the nation's top-ranked team in all three major college hockey polls this week.
The nationally first-ranked Bulldogs, under 20th-year head coach Bob Daniels, hold a current record of 20-8-4 and are 14-6-4 in the conference. Ferris State has gone unbeaten in the New Year, posting a 9-0-3 record in that stretch for the nation's longest current unbeaten streak at 12 games.
The Bulldogs are home this weekend (Feb. 17-18) for a two-game CCHA series against the Bowling Green Falcons. The puck is slated to drop at 7:05 p.m. (EDT) for both contests inside the Ewigleben Ice Arena.
