FSU Hockey Still Sixth In PairWise Rankings
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team remains one of the favorites to receive an NCAA Division I Tournament at-large bid despite falling in the second round of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Playoffs this past weekend.
The Bulldogs are currently still tied for sixth in the PairWise Rankings following weekend action. The PairWise ranking is a system which attempts to mimic the method used by the NCAA Selection Committee to determine participants for the NCAA Division I Tournament. Therefore, if the tournament were to start tomorrow, the Bulldogs would potentially be among the 16 selected teams that make the field.
Addtionally, FSU is presently fifth in the KRACH rankings, which is a different system that utilizes a sophisticated mathematical model to objectively rank teams.
FSU presently has the nation's seventh-best winning percentage this campaign with a 23-11-5 overall record and the Bulldogs' strength of schedule is among the top 25 teams in the country. The Bulldogs are also eighth in the country in the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI).
The winners of five conference tournaments around the country will receive their league's automatic bids into the NCAA Tournament, which means at least 11 other slots are available for at-large teams pending the results of league tournament action.
This week, the Bulldogs are presently ranked eighth nationally in the United States College Hockey Online.com Division I poll in addition to being listed seventh in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll and 10th by Inside College Hockey.
The official NCAA Tournament selections will be announced during the NCAA Selection Show this Sunday, March 18, at 12 p.m. (ET) on ESPNU.
Ferris State, which claimed the CCHA Regular-Season Championship for the second time in school history this season, received its only previous NCAA Tournament bid in 2002-03 when the Bulldogs reached the Elite Eight.
The NCAA Hockey regionals will take place at four sites the weekend of March 23-25 with the winner of each region advancing to the Frozen Four on April 5-7 in Tampa, Fla.
