Ferris State Hockey Announces Five-Member Recruiting Class

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey program has secured commitments from five individuals who will join the Bulldog program for the 2013-14 season as part of this fall's recruiting class.

Ferris State, which has been ranked nationally for the last 33 consecutive weeks and reached the national championship game at the 2012 Frozen Four, has added five student-athletes who are all currently playing in the United States Hockey League (USHL).

The group of five additions includes Cedar Rapids' Gerald Mayhew (Wyandotte), Kyle Schempp (Saginaw) of Sioux Falls, Muskegon's Chad McDonald (Battle Creek), Seth Adams (Big Rapids) of Des Moines and Ryan Lowney (Redford) of Youngstown, who originally committed to FSU last year.

All five members of this year's class are Michigan natives, including Adams, who played prep hockey in town at Big Rapids High School.  Mayhew, Schempp, McDonald and Adams are all forwards while Lowney is the lone defenseman in the class.

Their additions next fall will help offset the loss of four seniors from this year's team, including team captain Kyle Bonis.  All four of FSU's seniors this current season are forwards in Bonis, Travis Ouellette, Eric Alexander and Matt Kirzinger.

"We're thrilled to add these five student-athletes and they will certainly help offset the loss of a talented senior class," said FSU head coach Bob Daniels.  "The addition of these standouts is crucial as we prepare for our first season in the highly-competitive Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) next year."

Both Schempp and Adams join a list of former Traverse City North Stars players currently in the Bulldog program, including current FSU student-athletes such as Bonis, Garrett Thompson, CJ Motte, Travis White, Andy Huff and Zach Dorer.

"We've had outstanding success recruting past members of the North Stars' program and they've been a big reason why we've been so successful," said FSU Associate Head Coach Drew Famulak, who serves as the program's recruiting coordinator.  "These five all possess important skills and have the ability to challenge for key roles in our lineup."

The Bulldogs currently hold a 7-4-3 overall mark this season and are riding a five-game unbeaten streak heading into this weekend's Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) road series at rival Western Michigan.

Ferris State is presently only three points out of first place in the CCHA and one of only four teams in the conference with six or more victories in league action this season, which marks the final year of CCHA competition. A year ago, the Bulldogs captured their second CCHA Regular-Season Championship prior to winning the NCAA Midwest Regional and reaching the Frozen Four.
