Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University senior left wing Kyle Bonis (Lindsay, Ontario) has been chosen as one of the top 10 finalists for the 2012-13 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate hockey.

The award honors men's ice hockey student-athletes who excel both on and off the ice. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

Previously, Bonis was among the 20 national candidates for the award following the nomination process and has advanced to the final ballot of 10 finalists.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 20 candidates announced in November. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on the Senior CLASS Award website or on the Senior CLASS Award Facebook fan page through March 25. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches' votes to determine the winner.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four® in Pittsburgh April 11 and 13.

This year marks the second consecutive year in which the Bulldogs have had one of the 10 national finalists for the prestigous award as former Bulldog All-America defenseman Chad Billins was chosen as one of the 10 national finalists for the Senior CLASS Award last season.

Bonis, who was named to the 2012 Frozen Four All-Tournament Team as the Bulldogs reached the national championship game, placed third among FSU's scoring leaders a season ago with 30 points.  He had a squad second-best 19 goals and added 11 assists in playing all 43 contests.  Bonis' totals included three game-winning goals and four power-play markers last campaign.

Also a candidate for the Hobey Baker Award given to college hockey's top player, Bonis has registered an impressive 72 points with 44 goals and 28 assists in 130 career games at Ferris State. The standout winger has posted a team-high 23 points to date this year and holds career totals of 12 power play goals, eight game winners and a +25 rating.

Bonis, who is serving as FSU's team captain this season, will play his final regular-season home contest against Bowling Green State on Saturday (Feb. 16) night at the Ewigleben Ice Arena before a sold out crowd.  The official puck drop is set for 5:06 p.m. (ET) as part of Fox Sports Detroit's "Hockey Day In Michigan" coverage live from Big Rapids.

Saturday night's game will serve as FSU's annual "Senior Night" contest and the Bulldogs will honor five seniors, including Bonis, prior to the game.  Ferris State fans are encouraged to wear red, come early and cheer loud for the Bulldogs as part of a "Red Out" effort on Saturday.  The first 500 fans will receive free thundersticks and a special "Skate with the Dawgs" event will also take place following the regular-season home finale.  It will mark the final regular-season home game in the 42-year history of the CCHA.
