Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis team picked up a big win on Friday (April 12) in its final regular-season home match as the Bulldogs topped West Michigan rival Grand Valley State by a decisive 7-2 score inside the Racquet and Fitness Center.
The win lifted the nationally 34th-ranked Bulldogs to a 12-4 overall mark and a 9-2 ledger in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). GVSU fell to 13-10 overall and 8-3 in league competition as both squads entered the conference contest with identical GLIAC marks.
FSU took control early as the region's second-ranked Bulldogs claimed two of the three doubles flights. Ferris State picked up wins at both the first and second spots with GVSU's lone doubles triumph coming at the number three position.
The Bulldogs picked up right where they left off in the singles round as Ferris State won the top five flights in individual action. Four of the five Bulldog wins came in straight-sets with the Lakers' only victory taking place at the bottom of the singles lineup.
Laurent Galarneau, Sergiu Laza, Razvan Mag and Tyler Marengo were all double winners on the day for Ferris State against GVSU, which came into the match ranked eighth regionally.
The victory also snapped a two-match slide for the Bulldogs, who had won their first eight conference encounters of the year before falling on the road at Wayne State and Northwood.
Currently, the Bulldogs' nine wins to date this season in GLIAC play are the most in the conference. Northwood holds an 8-0 mark with WSU at 6-1 overall and the Bulldogs at 9-2 on the year.
Ferris State will play a non-league match at Lewis (Ill.) on Sunday (April 14) with match time set for 1 p.m. (ET) in Romeoville, Ill. The Bulldogs will then take part in the 2013 GLIAC Tournament next Friday thru Sunday (April 19-21) in Midland, Mich.
