Softball Wins Second Straight With 8-1 Thrashing Of Southern Indiana
The bats for the Ferris State University softball team continued to be active as the Bulldogs belted out a season-high 10 base hits in defeating Southern Indiana by an 8-1 score this Sunday (Feb. 21) in their final appearance at the 2010 Alabama-Huntsville Charger Chillout in Decatur, Ala.
The victory was Ferris State's second straight to date as the Bulldogs improved to 2-4 overall on the season.
Southern Indiana (0-5 overall) led off the non-conference encounter with its lone run of the contest coming in the top of the first inning. The Screaming Eagles would maintain their 1-0 lead until the bottom half of the third inning when the Bulldogs scored twice to go up 2-1. Ferris State would tally one run in the bottom of the fifth and then exploded for five runs in the sixth to secure the victory.
Ferris State, which outhit USI by a 10-4 margin, had two players with multiple-hit performances in freshman left fielder Morgan Kramerich (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) and sophomore first baseman Chelsea Morris (Jenison). Kramerich registered three hits in as many at bats to go with a RBI and two runs scored while Morris drove in three runs on a two-of-three hitting effort, which included a double.
Besides Morris, junior catcher Rachel Mueller (Santa Clarita, Calif./Valencia) and senior designated player Rhea Flores (Dearborn Heights/Southgate Anderson) also produced a two-base hit apiece and both racked up two RBIs each.
Senior center fielder Rachel Wade (Canton), sophomore third baseman Makenzi Peterson (Big Rapids), and senior second baseman Amanda Harrington (St. Joseph/Stevensville-Lakeshore) all had a hit with a single in the tourney-finale win.
In the circle, senior pitcher Kayle Stevenson (Holland/West Ottawa) improved to 1-2 on the season as the southpaw gave up four hits while striking out seven and walking five in a complete-game decision.
Ferris State is now idle until March 6 when the Bulldogs return to action at the Florida Rebel Springs Games Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla. FSU, under 13th-year head coach Keri Becker, will open up against former conference foe Gannon (Pa.) on Saturday, March 6, at 11 a.m. (EST). The Bulldogs are scheduled to play 11 games during their week-long stay in the Sunshine State.
