Dr. Phil Walling returns for the 2016-17 season as a volunteer assistant coach for both the Ferris State University men's and women's golf teams.
The 2016-17 campaign represents Walling's 18th year in an assistant coaching capacity for both the men's and women's golf programs at Ferris State.
Dr. Walling is a professor at the Michigan College of Optometry, which is located on the Ferris State University campus. He received his undergraduate degree form Western Michigan University and his doctorate in Optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry and is currently the Chief of Medical and Surgical Services at the Michigan College of Optometry. One of his interests is in the area of sports vision.
While in Texas, he worked with professional and collegiate athletes in golf, tennis, basketball and football helping each athlete to maximize their visual performance. He participated in the United States Olympic Festival while in Houston evaluating athletes from all over the country.
Besides coaching golf, Dr. Walling has been a tennis instructor for over 20 years and is a USPTA P-1 certified tennis professional. He has coached tennis in the college and high school ranks. He has maintained his tennis interests by teaching in the FSU adult tennis camps and has traveled with FSU's tennis teams to preseason tournaments.
