#21 Bulldogs Suffer Two Defeats In Opening Day Of Regional Crossover

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball team opened play in the 2012 Mizuno GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Tournament with a pair of tough defeats on Friday (Oct. 12) at Aurora, Ill.

The Bulldogs lost their opening match of the nation's largest college volleyball tournament to Lewis (Ill.) by a 3-2 score.  FSU then fell to nationally ninth-ranked Indianapolis 3-1 in Friday evening's second match.

Lewis topped FSU in the opener as the Flyers battled back after losing the opening set 25-16.  LU took the second and third sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-19, respectively. FSU battled back to win the fourth frame 25-20, but suffered a 15-10 loss in the deciding set.

Senior middle hitter Anne Sutton led the 21st-ranked Bulldogs with 16 kills against Lewis while sophomore outside hitter Courtney Rehm netted 11 kills and senior outside hitter Aly Brecht totaled 10 kills.

FSU also received 43 assists from senior setter Samantha Fordyce with both junior libero Brandie Merren and senior Paige Wyers totaling 21 digs each. Rehm had 20 digs, Brecht had 17 and Fordyce netted 12 for the Bulldogs.

Ferris State hit only .134 in the match with the Flyers netting a .159 figure.  FSU had 101 digs to 100 for the Flyers and the Bulldogs also posted 13 blocks to eight for Lewis.  Both teams had three service aces.

In the second match, the Bulldogs fell behind early to Indianapolis as the Greyhounds took the first two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-14.  FSU won set three 25-20 before Indy sealed the victory with a 25-18 win in the fourth set.

Brecht totaled 12 kills, Rehm had 11 and senior middle hitter Angi Kent had 10 for FSU in the loss.  Fordyce recorded 37 assists with Brecht pacing FSU with nine digs.

Indianapolis hit an impressive .303 figure with 67 kills to go with 63 digs, seven blocks and two aces.  Meanwhile, the Bulldogs had 45 kills, 41 digs, 12 blocks and two aces.

The Greyhounds were led by Kristina Kerrigan's match-high 23 kills.  Meghan Binkerd finished with 53 assists and Amy Oldenburg recorded 19 digs.

The Bulldogs fell to 14-5 overall with the two losses as FSU's eight-match winning streak came to an end.  

Ferris State will wrap up action in the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover on Saturday (Oct. 13) as the Bulldogs face Southern Indiana at 2 p.m. (ET).
