Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the 2012 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships on Saturday (Oct. 20) in Linwood, Mich.
The annual conference championships will be hosted by Northwood University at Maple Leaf Golf Course. The top runners from around the GLIAC will come to Mid-Michigan for the league championships.
The event will be held at the Maple Leaf Golf Course. The address for the course is: 158 N. Mackinaw Rd, Linwood, MI 48634. Admission to the GLIAC Championships is free for all spectators.
Saturday's event gets under way at 11 a.m. (ET) with the women's 6K race. The men's 8K event will begin at 11:45 a.m. (ET). Then, at 12:30 p.m. (ET), there will be an open race, which will be a 6K for the women and an 8K for the men raced simultaneously.
Grand Valley State is the defending champion on both the men's and the women's side.
The Ferris women's cross country team is ranked seventh nationally in the latest United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II National Rankings along with second in the Midwest Regional listing under fifth-year head coach Steve Picucci. Meanwhile, the men's team is 19th in the country and fifth in the region.
In addition to the Bulldog women, Grand Valley State is also ranked nationally in the women's field as the Lakers are listed third in the country and first in the region. Wayne State comes in at number 21 nationally with Saginaw Valley State ranked 27th along with Hillsdale at 32nd.
On the men's side, Grand Valley State is listed sixth in the country and first in the region. Wayne State's men's squad is ranked 27th in the national poll, Tiffin is 32nd and Ashland is 33rd overall.
Last season, the Bulldog women placed second and the men were fourth at the league championships (10/22) in Ashland, Ohio.
