Ferris State Softball Drops Two Games On Day Two At Embry-Riddle Invite

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad suffered a pair of close setbacks on Saturday (Jan. 31) in day two action at the Embry-Riddle Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fla.

FSU, which had started the event with a 2-0 mark on Friday, fell to Columbus State by a 9-4 score in the opener on day two before falling to Pittsburg State 13-7 in the nightcap.

In the opener, Columbus State roduced seven runs in the bottom of the third inning and shutout the Bulldogs in their final four at-bats for the win. FSU was outhit 12-8 for the contest.

Eight different batters all had one hit apiece for FSU in game one with Emily Killion coming up with a double and an RBI. The trio of Emma Gillard, Bailey McCalister and Jadyn Joseph all had hits as well.

FSU's Addison Gillard took the loss in the circle, giving up five earned runs on seven hits in two innings of work. Sally Leask pitched four innings and allowed three runs on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

In game two, the Bulldogs fell behind 6-0 against the Gorillas, but managed to tie the game up 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth before PSU notched six runs in the top of the seventh and kept Ferris State off the board in the bottom of the frame. Pittsburg State had 16 hits compared to 12 for FSU.

Designated player Emma Herremans and catcher Addison Wangler both had three hits for the Bulldogs while first baseman Alexis Kozlowski had two. Emma Gillard drove in two runs as did Kozlowski. The Bulldogs got doubles off the bats of Herremans, Breanna Blair and Wangler while Gillard homered.

In the circle, Katie Shuboy pitched three innings and gave up five runs on eight hits with four walks. Sophia Helm tossed one inning and allowed only a single run with two walks while Cecelia Bell threw three innings and allowed four earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

Due to forecasted weather conditions, the Bulldogs' final scheduled game on Sunday morning versus Mount Olive has been cancelled.

Ferris State will next be in action on Feb. 13 with a trip to #10 Francis Marion for a doubleheader at the Swamp Fox Sizzler event in Florence, S.C. FSU will also face Tusculum in a double dip the following day on Feb. 14 at the tourney.
