Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team opened the Swamp Fox Sizzler tourney on Friday (Feb. 13) with a pair of setbacks to the nation's #10-ranked Francis Marion in Florence, S.C.
The hosts captured a 7-0 triumph in the opener and then claimed a 10-2 decision in six innings in game two.
In the opening game, Ferris State got three hits from first baseman Alexis Kozlowski. Designated player Emma Herremans along with Breanna Blair and third baseman Bailey McCalister also produced hits.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Patriots put four runs on the board followed by three in the sixth. They finished with nine hits to seven for the Bulldogs.
FSU's Katie Shuboy finished with four unearned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk in five innings of work in the circle. Addison Gillard tossed one inning, giving up three runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout.
In game two, Ferris State took an early lead with two runs in the top of the first, but FMU came back to put six runs up in the bottom of the frame and the score stood until the Patriots added two runs each in both the fifth and sixth innings. The Bulldogs were outhit 12-6 for the game.
Ferris State was led at the plate by both Blair and catcher Addison Wangler, who had two hits each. Kozlowski doubled as did Herremans while Emma Gillard drove in a run and had a sacrifice fly.
The trio of Cecelia Bell, Sally Leask and Sophia Helm combined to give up six earned runs on 12 hits with two walks.
Ferris State will face Francis Marion again on Saturday (Feb. 14) at 12 p.m. (ET) before concluding the event versus Tusculum at 2 p.m. (ET).
