Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad wrapped up action in South Carolina with a split on Saturday (Feb. 14) at the Swamp Fox Sizzler Tourney in Florence.
The Bulldogs fell to 10th-ranked Francis Marion by a close 5-3 margin in the opener, but came back to beat Tusculum 9-1 in five innings in the finale. All three of FSU's setbacks in the weekend event came to host FMU.
In Saturday's opening contest, the Bulldogs fell behind early as the Patriots scored twice in the second and once in the third for an early 3-0 edge. FSU tied the game back up with three runs in the sixth, but Francis Marion came up with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Bulldogs. Overall, FMU had seven hits and the Bulldogs finished with six.
Outfielder Emma Gillard finished with two hits for the Bulldogs and drove in two runs. Jayden Marlatt homered and also had an RBI.
Ferris State's Cecelia Bell tossed six and one-third innings, giving up four earned runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Katie Shuboy allowed a single run on one hit.
In game two, Ferris State compiled 10 hits and limited Tusculum to only three in a 9-1 win. After the opponent scored a single run in the first, FSU came up with two runs in the second, one in the third, five in the fourth and once in the fifth to put the game away.
Both Gillard and left fielder Ava Gardner had two hits apiece. Gardner posted two doubles and drove in two runs while Gillard and Jadyn Joseph each had two RBI's. Gillard tripled in the win and the Bulldogs also got RBI's from Alexis Kozlowski and Emma Herremans.
Shuboy went the distance in the circle for FSU, allowing only a single earned run on three hits with six strikeouts and a walk in five innings of action.
Ferris State will next take part in the Dome Invitational on Feb. 19-20 in Rosemont, Ill. The Bulldogs will face Bemidji State and Minnesota Duluth in day one play on Thursday (Feb. 19) at 10 a.m. (ET) and 12 p.m. (ET), respectively.
