Ferris State Garners Day One Split At Space Coast Spring Games In Florida

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad opened action on Monday (March 9) with a non-league split at the USSSA Space Coast Spring Games in Melbourne, Fla.

The Bulldogs began their week in the Sunshine State by falling to nationally 11th-ranked Indianapolis 12-5 in the opener, but bounced back for a 5-2 win over Gannon (Pa.) in the finale. The two games marked the first of eight overall for FSU this week in Florida at the event.

In the opening game, the Bulldogs jumped in front of UIndy early by scoring three runs in the first inning. The Greyhounds, however, scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to build a 9-4 edge and didn't look back in garnering the win. Overall, Indianapolis had 11 hits and FSU finished with nine.

The Bulldogs got two-hit games from first baseman Alexis Kozlowski along with left fielder Ava Gardner, center fielder Emma Gillard and shortstop Jayden Marlatt. Gardner drove in two runs and had a home run while Gillard doubled and homered in the game. Marlatt also had a double and Kozlowski notched a triple.

The trio of Addison Gillard, Katie Shuboy and Sally Leask combined to strikeout seven with 12 walks in the setback.

In the nightcap against Gannon, the Bulldogs fell behind 2-1 after the first inning, but kept the Knights off the board the rest of the way. FSU scored once in the first, once in the third, once in the fifth and two times in the sixth. Overall, Ferris State had 10 hits and Gannon managed six.

Gardner tallied three hits while Kozlowski and third baseman Emma Herremans each had two . Both Kozlowski and Gardner had a double as did Emily Killion. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs got two RBI games from Kozlowski and Herremans.

In the circle, Cecelia Bell garnered the win, striking out four and walking only one with six hits allowed in seven innings of work.

The Bulldogs will be back on the field Tuesday (March 10) with two additional games. The opener against Ursuline has been pushed back to a 4:45 p.m. (ET) start while the second game against Rockhurst (Mo.) will start at 7 p.m. (ET).
