FSU Posts Shutout Victory And Narrow Setback In Day Two Softball Action In Florida

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad claimed a day two split on Tuesday (March 10) at the USSSA Space Coast Spring Games in Florida, earning a shutout win in the opener before a one-run setback in the finale in Melbourne.

The Bulldogs topped Ursuline 8-0 in five innings in the opener before falling to Rockhurst (Mo.) by a 3-2 score in the second game of the day. Both were regional matchups for FSU.

In the opener, Ferris State struck for three runs in the first inning and three more in the second before notching two in the fourth and ending the contest in five innings. The Bulldogs finished with 11 hits in the win compared to only three for Ursuline.

FSU was led at the plate by third baseman Emma Herremans, who tallied three hits, scored twice and drove in a run. She also had a triple as did shortstop Jayden Marlatt, who also tallied in RBI.

Meanwhile, Ferris State got three RBI's and two hits from left fielder Breanna Blair to go with two hits and a run drive in by centerfielder Emma Gillard. Right fielder Ella McDonald also had two hits in the game.

The Bulldogs' Katie Shuboy picked up the victory in the circle, tossing five shutout innings with only three hits allowed. She also had five strikeouts and walked none.

In game two, Rockhurst jumped in front by scoring the first run of the game in the third, but FSU answered in the fifth with two runs to grab the lead. However, the Hawks scored twice in the bottom of the sixth and kept Ferris State off the board in the final at-bat to come away with the win. RU had six hits compared to four for the Bulldogs.

Ferris State got hits from Marlatt along with first baseman Alexis Kozlowski, left fielder Ava Gardner and Blair. Gardner notched a double and Herremans knocked in a run.

The Bulldogs' Cecelia Bell tossed all six innings and did not allow an earned run while striking out two.

Ferris State will next face Goldey-Beacom and Thomas More on Thursday (March 12) in Florida starting at 10 a.m. (ET) and 12:15 p.m. (ET), respectively.
